Employing
English and French techniques, participants will make a number of different
willow baskets including an English fruit sieve, a French casserole,
and a Swiss berry basket. Time permitting, the course will conclude
with a field trip, tour and tasting at Heather Sanft’s family’s
winery and berry farm. Participants can U-pick blueberries to fill the
baskets they’ve created and also see her living willow lattice
fences.

Heather
Sanft, a highly respected basketmaker,
has honed her craft over the course of 20 years. She has apprenticed
in France and England, and is the eighth generation of a founding Lunenburg,
Nova Scotia family. Although she has utilized a variety of materials
for her baskets, the majority are made from willow. Her university degrees
are in anthropology and museum studies and her lifelong passion is the
study of Native American Indian basketry.
