The "tweaked"
floor cloth of this workshop goes beyond decorative elements often seen
in commercial products into a resonant personal statement with cultural,
historical or political impact. Su Rogers shares her technique of incorporating
a short statement of personal meaning with supporting motifs and imagery
into a vibrant canvas. Combining personal narrative and imagery in the
painted floor cloth offers lots of room for both joyful art play and
the consideration of issues or values of personal importance. Participants
may wish to incorporate a special poem, bit of oral history, travel
memory, or any other source of inspiration as a jumping off point. With
acrylics as the painting medium for the cloths, participants will be
given direction in using them to the best advantage for their project,
be it naïve or sophisticated in technique.
Su
Rogers often
focuses her artistic interests on Maritime themes and concerns, looking
to the folk arts for inspiration. A graduate of Nova Scotia College
of Art and Design, she has shown her work professionally over the past
20 years in Ottawa, Newfoundland and Labroador, Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax,
and other locations. Now living in Ontario, Su returns home each year
to renew her bonds with her family, the landscape, the fishery and the
unique culture of her home province, Nova Scotia.
